Sparking Children’s Interest in Science

Cool demonstrations, interviews with real Abbott scientists, and fun science facts make ScienceEd the hottest kids’ site on the web. The Abbott Fund’s new site is already inspiring young people to consider careers in the sciences.

How do you “make” a scientist? Research shows that sparking a child’s curiosity at a young age can produce a lifelong interest in science. As part of its commitment to science education, the Abbott Fund has created ScienceEd, an engaging website designed to engage and encourage young people ages 7-14. Building on learnings from Family Science and other programs, ScienceEd features activities that will capture kids’ interest and encourage them to think about careers in the sciences.

A series of modules offers different pathways to explore.

  • The Spark presents animated videos, illustrating stories told by Abbott employees about the moment that made them want to become scientists.
  • They Do What? features real Abbott scientists dispelling the mystery of titles like “microbiologist” and “microfabrication engineers,” to let kids start dreaming bigger about their future.
  • The Lab Crew spotlights appealing teens who guide visitors through fun demonstrations and experiments, revealing the scientific principles behind each one.
  • Q&A is a free-wheeling series of dialogues between an inquisitive child and a scientist, who explains “Why are feet so smelly?” and other silly-yet-serious questions.

All of the modules show young people that careers in science are within their reach—while inspiring and entertaining them with real-world experiments and information from professional scientists.
